About products and suppliers

Jeans fabric or denim is a popular and timeless material that is used to make clothing and accessories. With its versatility, durability, and comfort, it’s no surprise that jeans are one of the most commonly-worn items of clothing. As such, there is an ever-growing demand for high quality denim fabrics from both individuals and companies in the fashion industry.

For the DIY-loving seamstress, denim material offers a lot of possibilities. Apart from denim dresses or attires, one can also make denim purses, denim rugs amongst other things.

How is denim made?

Denim fabric is made from cotton fibres. The cotton plant as it grows develops a thick ball of fibres around its seeds. These fibres are then harvested and separated from the seeds.

Once cleaned, the cotton fibres are then combed into long, thin fibres before being spun into yarn using industrial machines. Throughout the production process, dyes, washes and treatments are applied to change the appearance of the finished denim products.

Once the cotton yarn has been made, the next step is to dye it. The dyeing process is divided into two major categories: Indigo dyeing and sulphur dyeing. The Indigo dyeing gives the denim material the characteristic and unique blue colour of jeans while the sulphur dyeing gives the specialty black colours as well as other colours such as purple, red, grey, green, etc. After the dyeing process, it is woven into the characteristic denim fabric we all know and love.

Types of Denim Fabric

Over the years, different forms of denim has emerged. The most popular being: raw denim, stretch denim, selvedge denim, acid wash denim, etc. The raw denim refers to denim that has neither been washed nor treated. Typically is is worn for six months to a year without washing to ensure it forms to fit the wearer's body. Stretch denim refers to denim that has been mixed with spandex or similar material to allow for a stretchier denim material. This type of denim is used in the making of form fitting jeans like the skinny jeans. Selvedge denim is sometimes referred to as the gold standard of denim or jeans. It's fashioned uniquely and has a narrower fabric with a tighter weave that is resistant to fraying or unraveling.
