Headgear has been a part of human history for as long as there has been human civilization. Besides social, cultural, or religious factors, its sustained existence is mostly attributable to the practical protection it provides. Globally, the Middle Easterners are known for their headdress-wearing tradition. The typical headwear of men in the Middle East is frequently referred to as black and white Arab scarfss or black desert scarfs. In fact, these are the traditional men's headdresses known as keffiyeh or shemagh.

What is a shemagh?

A shemagh is a square-shaped scarf that the Arabic wear as a type of traditional headdress together with an agal- a separate black cord accessory, which is worn looped to keep the shemagh in place. It is frequently used in desert or dry areas to protect against sand and sunburn. All black shemaghs or solid black keffiyehs are among the most commonly found shemagh in the region.

How many types of shemagh are available out there?

Shemaghs are often categorized based on their materials, designs, and colors. In terms of material, whether it is the more commonly found solid black shemagh and black and white shemagh or the less common black and gold shemagh or blue and black shemagh, they are all made by either cotton or wool. Design-wise, black tactical scarfs with military style and the black and white, red and white checkered designs are some of the most popular designs available.

How is Shemagh Used in Multiple Ways?

In line with their cotton-made material, besides sun protection, shemagh serves as an effective eye mask or towel too. It is also a neck scarf to keep warm, especially in the desert where these "black Arab scarfs" are widely used, as the temperature can drop to an average of -4 degrees Celsius or 25 degrees Fahrenheit at night. These days, shemagh has also become one of the most fashionable and in-demand accessories in the world of fashion.
